Read more →There's no shortage of insect screens, repellents, traps and insecticides on the market — but the cheapest option is rarely the most effective, and the most expensive isn't always necessary. Our buying guides compare the realistic choices for Singapore homes so you can match the product to the problem, your budget and your living situation.
For each category we look at how well it actually works, how safe it is around children and pets, how long it lasts in our humid climate, and whether it's worth the price.
Where a DIY product won't cut it, we'll say so — and point you toward a professional service or a more durable solution like a custom-fit screen you can buy in our shop.
Budget screens can work for a season, but thin mesh tears easily and weak adhesive fails in Singapore's humidity. A slightly higher-quality magnetic or fixed screen usually lasts far longer and costs less over time.
Repellents with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are the most reliable for skin. For the home, screening windows and removing standing water tackle the problem at the source rather than masking it.
Independent testing has found little evidence that ultrasonic devices reliably repel insects or rodents. Proven methods — baits, traps, screens and good hygiene — are a better use of your money.
If the problem is small and recent, a DIY product is often enough. If it's recurring, widespread, or involves termites or bed bugs, a professional service is usually more cost-effective in the long run.
Check the mesh is fine enough to block the pests you're worried about, that the frame type fits your window or door, and that it's removable for cleaning. Magnetic, no-drill screens suit most HDB and condo windows.
